Area Elks Host Free Events for Residents with Special Needs

Elks lodges across the East Central District recently brought residents together for two events serving children and adults with special needs, along with their families, caregivers and educators.

District members represent lodges in Stirling, Summit, Mountainside, Springfield, Cranford, Union and Rahway. Their efforts supported a carnival at Stirling Lodge #2392 and the Elks’ annual Friendship Day at Turtle Back Zoo.

The Special Needs Carnival welcomed more than 60 children, adults, family members and caregivers for an afternoon of recreation. Participants enjoyed carnival games with prizes, arts and crafts, entertainment and a visit from Elroy T. Elk, the organization’s mascot. A barbecue meal and ice cream rounded out the gathering.

At Turtle Back Zoo, Friendship Day hosted more than 1,600 students with special needs, teachers and aides. Attendees explored the animal exhibits and took part in activities, games and train rides. Lunch was also provided during the outing.

Both events were offered free of charge through fundraising, donations and grants from the Elks National Foundation. Together, they gave participants opportunities to enjoy shared activities and spend time with others in welcoming settings.

The gatherings reflect the organization’s motto, “Elks Care—Elks Share,” and its broader commitment to supporting children with special needs throughout New Jersey.

According to the Elks, that assistance includes support for clinics and services provided by nurses, therapists, pediatricians, psychologists and teachers. The organization also helps provide equipment such as crutches, wheelchairs, walkers and hospital beds to people who need it.

Another part of that work is Elks Camp Moore, which offers children with special needs a summer vacation away from home at no cost. Campers can try new adventures, build friendships and participate in experiences designed to encourage independence and self-confidence.
