Marcy Chevali Brings Artful Connections to Kean Gallery

Delicate glass, interwoven wire and flowing wool came together in Twisting Wool into Thread: Works by Marcy Chevali, which opened September 8 at Kean University’s Karl and Helen Burger Gallery in Union.

The exhibition brought together 15 works showcasing Chevali’s patient, hands-on approach to transforming materials. Thin glass rods, bent with a torch, formed irregular grids, while knotted wire and mohair became structures the artist calls “nets.” Some pieces appeared suspended in space; others extended across walls or became part of handmade paper.

Drawing its title from Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad, the exhibition connected Chevali’s methodical process with the story of Penelope weaving a shroud. Throughout the collection, the relationship between delicate materials and sculptural forms invited a closer look.

Visitors still have time to explore the exhibition, which remains on view through December 4. The gallery, located on the first floor of the Maxine and Jack Lane Center for Academic Success, is open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is pay as you wish.
