The planned center will expand the branch’s fitness offerings with more than 35 pieces of new cardio and strength-training equipment, free weights and barbells, and a dedicated area for stretching and recovery. The YMCA said the project is intended to give members of varied ages and experience levels more room and equipment choices as they pursue personal wellness goals.
The Union branch has served the community for about 60 years. The Gateway Family YMCA, which serves communities in eastern Union County and northern Middlesex County, traces its broader history to 1900 and marked its 125th anniversary in 2025. In addition to fitness facilities, the organization provides youth programs, aquatics, camp, child care and other community-based services.
The new center is expected to complement existing programs and give Union residents another local setting for routine exercise, strength training and active aging. The YMCA said it will share additional information about opening timing and access as work moves forward. Construction updates will be shared with branch members and the public.
